Establishing a relationship between friction force and wear has been of the main subjects in tribology.  We are showed that the friction force increases when one of surfaces is deformed plastically and there is material transfer to the other surface [1]. In the present study, the author demonstrates that friction is influenced by the wear mode which in turn is dependent upon the distance slid by the junction formed.

Experimental procedure

A conical pin was pressed against a plate by dead weight of 5N. They were slid in air and nitrogen respectively at various sliding velocities in the range 40-180 µm/s. Both pin and disk specimens were made of zinc having purity of 99.99%. On the other hand, friction increases with increasing sliding distance in air. Also the friction in air is higher as compared to that in nitrogen after a sliding distance of 8 mm.
