Wavelength channel minimization-based energy-aware mechanism in a multichannel EPON

In this paper we propose an applicable Energy-Aware Mechanism (EAM) in a multichannel Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) using the wavelength channel minimization approach.

In the proposed EAM, the eligibility of a wavelength channel to minimize is detected by exploring the buffer occupancy and packet delay condition of the Optical Network Units (ONUs) that satisfies the user’s Quality of Service (QoS) requirement. To define the buffer occupancy and packet delay condition of the ONUs, we elaborate the controlling mechanism that exploits only known real information in the multi-point control protocol (MPCP) exchanged between the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and the ONUs. The resource management is performed using non-joint, off-line dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) and dynamic wavelength assignment (DWA) algorithms considering the OLT receiver’s wake-up time and the wavelength tuning time of the tunable ONU.

The performance of the proposed EAM is evaluated through simulations and the result reflects that energy can be saved by 50% on average for the OLT receivers’ power consumption without violating the user’s QoS requirement.
