Abstract
About 41% of students in the higher education system in Mongolia are studying Japanese language. This paper attempts to study the Kanji learning ability of these learners. The data for this research has been collected from interviews of Mongolian Japanese language teachers and surveys of learners by applying the ‘Kanji vocabulary processing’ test developed by Kano (2004). From the interview, it has been found that, the shape, meaning and readings of Kanji are suitably introduced in the Kanji classes. Nevertheless, from the survey it has been found that Mongolian learners of Japanese lack the ability to fully use the information thus acquired, related to grammar and the meaning of Kanji, to accurately select the appropriate Kanji. Going forward, it is important to implement a tuition strategy whereby students emphasize the context, and utilize their existing knowledge to deduce the meaning of Kanji.
