The term “Oyrad” has been
spelled in Russian and in English as “Oirat”. Therefore we will use in
this volume in general the word Oirat in Englsih as Mongolian “Oyrad”. Of course when the author discusses the details and needs the word“Oyrad”, he or she uses it.
Mongolian ethnic term “Oyrad” includes the nomadic groups in
the western Mongoalia; Dorbets, Torguts, Zakhachins, Myangats, Altai
Uriyankhais, Uluds, Bayads, and etc. One of these nations,
which is known in the scientific literature under the ethnonym "Kalmyks"
now live in the north - western coast of the Caspian Sea, in a closed valley
between rivers of Volga and Don. They moved here from the beginning of XVII
century. This land being populated by the Kalmyks, long before their
appearance, was known in Russia as Polovtsian Steppe. After the arrival here of
the Kalmyks, the area became known as the Kalmyk Steppe. Another part of the
Oirat now living in the Ejene Oasis,
Inner Mongolia,China. They are the descendants of Oirat, who populated
here from the Kalmyk steppe in the late XVIII century. Another part of the
Oirat now living in the Xinjang and
Qinghai provinces of China.
